The Pure Joy of Playing the Cello

Hello, I’m kuro, a cello instructor.

Today’s post is a bit of casual reflection.

Lately, I’ve been quite busy with various activities—guest solo performances, solo concerts, and coaching at schools and orchestras…

Even so, the moments I spend playing Studio Ghibli music bring me an immense sense of happiness and joy.

A Lifelong Companion Through Every Season

Ever since my student days, my cello has played countless roles:

  • A wonderful mental break from studying
  • A great stress reliever
  • A way to combat a lack of exercise (playing burns around 100 calories in 30 minutes)

Now, it is simply a part of my daily life—an absolute necessity I couldn’t live without. Because I love playing the cello so much, whenever I have free time, I naturally find myself wanting to pick it up.

Sharing the Happiness Through Performance

When I perform in front of an audience, there is one golden rule I always keep in mind: never forget the feeling of pure enjoyment.

That is why, whenever I step on stage, I make it a point to enjoy the performance with all my heart. I truly believe that by doing so, that sense of joy naturally reaches everyone listening.

Finding Peace and Relaxation at Home

When I play alone, I simply relax, choose my favorite songs, and enjoy a laid-back, cozy session.

I might try out a tune that caught my interest, or play a piece over and over again if I fall in love with it. Doing this clears my head and brings a deep sense of peace to my heart.

Because the cello is large, you have to hold it right against your body, which I think is another reason it feels so comforting.

The physical sensation of low notes resonating directly against your chest is wonderfully relaxing, and sometimes I just sit back and leisurely play low-register melodies.

On top of all that, participating in concerts opens the door to meeting so many wonderful people, which is easily one of the greatest highlights of being a musician.
